I have had the best time thinking up some fun recipes this week while doing my giveaway with Chebe Bread! Seriously, I just cannot get over how versatile this dough is! As I mentioned before, these dough mixes are made of virtually nothing except tapioca flour and some seasonings. They are free of gluten, soy, corn, rice, potato, yeast, peanut, tree nuts, eggs, lactose/casein, iodine, and sugar. They are also non GMO and Kosher Certified.
One of the first things I knew I wanted to try with this dough was bagels. There is a brand of bagels/rolls that we occasionally buy at the store that is the same premise and made from tapioca flour, but they are $8 for 5 bagels. That’s nuts! I knew there had to be a way to replicate them. So I bought a cheap donut pan to try. I’ve also tried a silicone baking pan for other things in the past and I definitely prefer the non-stick metal version!
I was going to make these bagels just plain, but when I heard that Chebe made this garlic-onion breadstick mix, I knew that’s what I wanted to use. You may have heard about the Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seed Seasoning Mix. If you haven’t had the chance to try it yet, the hype is REAL. It’s good. One of my favorite ways to use it is on avocado toast and eggs in the morning.
These Chebe Everything bagels are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, very reminiscent of their glutenous counterparts we once knew and loved. You can absolutely make a couple of batches because these freeze really well. If frozen, I suggest popping them in the microwave for a 15-20 seconds to loosen up the bread for slicing and then toasting.
- Prep Time10 min
- Cook Time25 min
- Total Time35 min
- 1 box Chebe Garlic-Onion Breadstick Mix
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 tablespoons milk (or dairy-free substitute)
- 2-3 tablespoons Trader Joe's Everything But The Bagel Sesame Seed Seasoning Mix (or homemade seasoning)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Prepare Chebe Garlic-Onion Breadstick mix according to directions on box (omit the optional cheese you can add to the batter):
- Blend Chebe Mix with 2 tablespoons olive oil (no cheese) and 2 room temperature eggs
- Slowly add in 4 tablespoons milk/milk substitute
Knead dough well. You can pour a little olive oil on your hand if dough is too sticky.
Separate dough into six even balls. I like to make the dough into an even loaf. Cut that in half and then cut each half into three even sections. If you have a kitchen scale, you are going for about 64 grams (give or take) per dough ball.
Flatten balls slightly. Stick finger or thumb through center to make a hole in the middle to make bagel shape. Place in donut pan and form around the center part. These will expand quite a bit during baking. If you don’t have a donut pan, then you can form by hand and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
After all the bagels are shaped, then dip the top in an egg wash (1 egg + 1 tablespoon warm water). You can also use a brush if you have one.
Dip the top of the bagel in the Everything seasoning mix.
Bake at 375 degrees for 23-25 minutes until slightly golden brown.
Slice and serve with your favorite toppings!
Don’t worry if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby to get the seasoning! You can totally make your own. I am linking to a recipe on the blog Gimme Some Oven, because Ali is darling and she makes everything so easy to make on your own!
